3M CEP Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to have a coaching card if I am only going to be an assistant coach?
Yes, all coaches need to register to the proper level.

Why doesn’t my card have a sticker on it with an expiration date?
Because that is your coach registrations card not your CEP card. All registered coaches and players get a registration and membership card each year.

How long is my card valid?
The card is valid for three seasons. Therefore if your last clinic sticker says 2001-02 then you need to get recertified at the same level or move up to the next level.

If I lose my card how do I get another one?
The form is located below. Print it off and mail it to:

What happens if I do not get certified?
You will not be rostered on your team and will not be able to participate after December 31st.

Can I take the classes out of order?
Yes you may do so up through level 3 but we discourage it. The curriculum is sequential. You must complete level 3 before you take level 4.

Will I have to take refresher courses every 3 years?
With Levels 1, 2 & 3, yes.  At level 3 you have three options. The first is to take a Level 4 course. The second is to take another level 3 course. Lastly you can recertify on line through USA Hockey. The online program is very good and you can do it from home. There is a two week window from the time you start until you must complete it. It will take 6-8 hours to complete. At levels 1 and 2 you need only take the next level or the same level again. Once you have a level 4 card you do not ever have to recertify.

Where and when are clinics held?
Each Minnesota Hockey District has a Head coach that is responsible to putting on levels 1, 2 &3 clinics in their district. The schedules are posted on the USA Hockey registration site. Click on the link on the Home page or the Coaches page to get to the USA Hockey site. When you get to the broad listings type MN in the state box and click on search. The clinics in Minnesota will be listed. You can register for them on line with a credit/debit card. Clinics are offered in many locations state wide beginning in late September and concluding in December.

What if I register and pay for a clinic and cannot attend?
Your registration can be transferred to another clinic. Check with your District Head Coach for assistance.

Can I register on Line for the clinics out of order?
Yes, if you register for the lowest one first the system should allow you to take them out of order.

What if I do not have a credit card?
You can walk up to most clinics and register at the door. Checks are preferred.

If I played college or pro hockey can I get a waiver?
Playing hockey and coaching hockey require different skills. If you played in the NHL you can get a waiver to level 2. Check with Minnkota Coach in Chief, Mike MacMillan (763-682-7303).

The coaching Education Program is designed to provide you with age specific coaching tools so that your players may become the best they can be. We hope that the clinics will do the same for you as a coach. The better you coach the better the experience for your players. Every day is a great day for hockey.
